I ran across this article about the importance of coaching and how challenging it is for managers to accomplish. It makes some great points. My favorites highlighted below.
“Business coaching has gone from fad to fundamental. Leaders and organizations have come to understand how valuable it can be, and they’re adding “the ability to coach and develop others” to the ever-growing list of skills they require in all their managers. In theory, this means more employee development, more efficiently conducted. But in reality, few managers know how to make coaching work.
According to the 2010 Executive Coaching Survey, conducted by the Conference Board, 63% of organizations use some form of internal coaching, and half of the rest plan to. Yet coaching is a small part of the job description for most managers. Nearly half spend less than 10% of their time coaching others.
With such limited time devoted to coaching, organizations need to be sure their managers know how to do it right. "Candice Frankovelgia
Right, and that would be to hire someone who is a coach.
The best analogy I can think of when it was my Uncle Ralph’s night to make dinner. He would pull out his credit card and ask us what we wanted to order. His job was not to make dinner; it was to make money, to pay for dinner. He was well aware and didn’t waste the little time he had available in the evening attempting to perfect something that had nothing to do with why he was chosen for his role in the first place.
For a little extra clarity on this topic, I checked out what Merriam-Webster had to contribute.
